How Often Should You Post YouTube Shorts?

Posting frequency matters less than most creators think, and in a specific way. What the cadence actually changes, and how to pick one you can hold.

The advice ranges from three a week to five a day, which should tell you the number is not the point. Frequency is not a growth lever by itself. It is a way of buying more attempts, and attempts only compound if the format is working.

What Frequency Actually Buys

Each Short is a test. It gets shown to a small audience, and how that audience behaves decides whether it gets shown to more. Publishing more often means running more tests, which means finding a working format sooner and getting more distribution once you have one.

What frequency does not do is rescue a format that loses viewers in the first two seconds. Ten weak videos a week produce the same outcome as one weak video a week, only faster and with more effort spent.

So the real question is not "how often should I post" but "is my format ready to be amplified."

A Cadence That Matches Your Stage

If you are still finding a format, publish enough to learn but not so much that you cannot review what happened. Three to five a week is usually sufficient, and every one of them should be watched back with the retention graph open.

Once retention is consistent — viewers regularly reaching the halfway point — daily publishing starts to pay for itself. This is the stage where volume works, because you are amplifying something that already holds attention.

Beyond roughly one a day, returns flatten for most channels. Multiple daily uploads mainly help when you are running genuinely different series or targeting different audiences, not when you are posting variations of the same idea.

Consistency Beats Volume

A channel that publishes four times a week for six months will almost always outperform one that publishes twice a day for three weeks and then stops. Audiences form habits around reliability, and so do you.

Pick the highest cadence you can hold on your worst week, not your best one. If you can only guarantee three, publish three. Raising a cadence you are comfortable with is easy. Recovering from a stall is not.

This is the strongest argument for automating production: it makes the floor higher. A pipeline that generates and publishes on a schedule removes the weeks where life gets in the way, which are the weeks that break most channels.

Same Time or Any Time?

Posting time matters less for Shorts than for long-form, because short-form distribution is driven by ongoing feed placement rather than a subscriber notification spike. A video can find its audience days after upload.

That said, a consistent slot is useful for you. It turns publishing into a routine rather than a decision, and it makes performance comparisons cleaner because you have removed one variable.

When to Slow Down

There are two good reasons to reduce cadence. The first is quality: if you are publishing videos you would not watch, more of them will not help. The second is diagnosis: if performance suddenly dropped, publishing more makes it harder to tell what changed.

Cutting back for two weeks to fix a format costs almost nothing. Publishing daily into a problem you have not identified costs the whole quarter.
